Reminder:  There is still one week left in this contest!  Get at entry form at the Children's Desk now!

The Waterford Library is sponsoring a children's bookmark design contest to celebrate Children's Book Week, May 7-13, 2012.  Waterford students in grades 1-6 can participate in this contest.  Three winners will be choosen: one from grades 1 and 2, one from grades 3 and 4, and one from grades 5 and 6.  The three winning entries will be professionally printed and available to the public beginning May 7.

Each winning student will receive enough bookmarks for their family and classmates.  Entry forms are available beginning March 25 in the Children's Department.  The deadline for entries is April 25.  We are using the 2012 Summer Reading Program theme, "Dream Big--Read!" as this year's inspiration for a bookmark design.  All bookmark designs are expected to reflect the theme.  So, use your imaginations to think of a great design that puts this year's theme and books together.

Is there an elephant buried in Waterford?

That is a question we've occasionally been asked over the years.  You might think it's one of those urban legends, but in fact, it is true.  Her name was Little Jennie, and she even appeared in the movie "Elephant Walk" with Elizabeth Taylor.  To find out what an elephant was doing in Waterford, Michigan, and what happened after she sadly expired, read the attached article which was published in the local paper at the time.
